Whew.
The semester is done and over, and boy am I ever glad. I will spare you the details, except to say that it was HARD! While I am no management guru now, at least I have learned plenty to feel that I have a solid (theoretical?) foundation.
Anyway, let’s get to the candy of this post. Things to Check Out:
internetarchive.org. This is a great way to wile away the day into intellectual oblivion with copyright expired material in film, print, and sound. In particular, check out Caw Caw; Or the Chronicle of Crows. It’s an illustrated children’s books with its roots in the Victorian era.
Next up: gapminder.org. This site is in beta but looks like it has tremendous potential as a data miner that also allows the user to create interesting visual presentations of the most depressing statistics. I believe that a video is available through Google on the founder’s presentation.
Interesting article of note: “A World in Three Aisles: Browsing the Post-Digital Library.” by Gideon Lewis-Kraus in the May 2007 issue of Harper’s. This article discusses the Prelinger Library, which is a couple’s answer to the increasing digital library that resigns the physical ephemera of our history to neglect and rot. It’s also part love story of the best kind. Fun fact, LC and Dewey are verboten. Materials are classified first by geography and then topical transitions between subjects that have relationships we understand in our everyday lives.
Okay, final item: Bad Subjects: Political Education for Everyday Life at bad.eserver.org. This is an e-zine I have yet to explore extensively, but it looks interesting. If you, my dear reader, get a chance to peruse the site, please post a comment with your opinion.
The next post will be book related; I have at least three in mind.
